Obama warns of dire economic situation, demands bold, swift action

Jan 24, 2009, 15:43 GMT

US President Barack Obama (2nd L) is joined by US Vice President Joe Biden (L) on 22 January 2009 during a meeting in the Oval Office on the economy with Director of the Office of Management and Budget Peter Orszag, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and National Economic Director Lawrence Summers (R) at the White House, Washington.

Washington - In his first weekly address, US President Barack Obama Saturday called for fast action on his economic stimulus plan and warned that 'a bad situation could become dramatically worse ... if we do not act boldly and swiftly.'

Obama said he is hoping to get his 825-billion-dollar economic stimulus package through Congress 'in less than a month,' an expectation he drove home on Friday at his meeting with Republican and Democratic lawmakers at the White House.

Earlier this month, Obama said he has set a target of mid February for passage.

The weekly message, which is also being released in audio and video form on the White House website, was emailed to news organizations late Friday, an apparent successor to former president George W Bush's weekly radio address.

Bush's messages were always embargoed until 1500 GMT, but Obama's address was moved up to 1100 GMT, or 6 am local time. Until his inauguration on Tuesday, Obama had also been releasing a weekly radio address.

Obama, who has pledged to give priority to the devastating financial crisis and year-long recession, will be meeting with his economic advisors on Saturday at 1600 GMT. He is to receive daily economic briefings with the same detail and urgency as the traditional daily security briefings given the US president, his spokesman said this week.

Obama said his administration had begun 'in the midst of an unprecedented crisis that calls for unprecedented action.' He noted that the weekly unemployment filings were the highest in 26 years, and the unemployment rate could reach double digits 'if nothing is done.'

The legislation includes tax cuts and spending to create 3 to 4 million jobs and put money into infrastructure and clean energy development.

The bill has moved through House committees earlier this week, but mainly with Democratic support. Republicans, who are in the minority, want deeper tax cuts and believe the spending portion is higher than immediately needed.

The US economy shed 2.6 million jobs last year as the economy continues to tumble as the United States copes with the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

'825-billion-dollar economic stimulus package '

That represents approximately $100/year interest payments for each of your children for their entire lives. Which brings the current total to about: $1800/year in interest payments for your children for their entire lives. That will be $1800/year worth of food that they can not purchase so that you can now buy your LCD flat screen T.V.s and your F-150 trucks and other trinkets.

Do you think it is worth it? Putting your children in bondage and servitude?

Do you have ANY idea how serious the current economic problems are? Will those problems go away all by themselves? When you get a toothache, do you see the dentist? A dental visit can be painful, but it beats a gum infection.

The ecobony has a systemic infection. Banks cannot raise capital from the usual sources. We depend on China for funding, and if China truly decides to spend on its own infrastructure (they are spending more than out entire TARP package), and slows down T-bill purchases, the U.S. Government itself can become short of funds.

Better we make the investments now (or have the surgery now, if you will), than leave in place an economy suffering from 'sepsis', which won't allow businesses to borrow, or consumers to fund their mortgages.

Only simpletons look for simple answers. The GOP is in effect a drug store stocking only aspirin (tax cuts, which won't spur job creation). After all, most sick people get a headache - and aspirin cures a headache. It will also cause gastric bleeding; but hell, we can fix that later.

The reaction of Bush/Paulsen was that of panicked amateurs, who saw the entire system collapsing and threw money at it with no accountability. Look at Freddie Mac asking for another $35 billion today; or the shareholders of Merrill furious about their takeover by B of A, who failed to comprehend how bad off Merrill actually was. By doing nothing, it becomes even worse.

Support your President, and let him run the country. It's why he was elected. You can moan about performance later; but after 4 whole days in office, let the man function.

What Obama SHOULD do is give the public a REAL idea of the seriousness, and scare the crap out of you.

'When you get a toothache, do you see the dentist?'

I use preventative medicine.

I have seen one dentist in the last 20 years for a teeth cleaning. And that dentist stated that he could not do anything because my teeth were already clean.

... But: He also tried to con me into getting teeth whitening treatments and ornamental plastic caps. I told him: NO, because I know that money is better served to help my children pay down their portion of the debt for the credit you so desperately seek.

I do realize that the typical U.S. citizen would have opted for the cosmetic service and would rather drink beer and soda and get cavities and need a dentist instead of acting sensibly.

But, yeah. Once your teeth rot out then you are shafted and deserve what you get.

Perhaps I should have used appendicitis as a better metaphor - neglecting that infection kills you a whole lot quicker.

Perhaps, your dentist understood that teaching you about plaque below the gumline was a fool's errand, and decided to spend his time on those who actually realized that preventing problems is better than dealing with outcomes.

Lance's reply indicates someone who has no idea of what 'pro-active' is. That's what the GOP 2001-2006 provided - a laissez-fairs environment where the crooks got to set the policy. Lance, in this little play, would have the role of the ignorant taxpayer, who did not understand the meaning of the words 'bubble' and 'leverage'; yet still thinks that they're entitled to what they envision is their due; no matter the cost to the economy and nation.

The entire Congress is guilty in the matter of pumping up Fannie and Freddie, and selling the idea that people without financial means to carry a mortgage were still entitled to one.

www.nytimes.com/2009/01/25/us/politics/25regulate.html?ref=us

Officials say they will make wide-ranging changes, including stricter federal rules for hedge funds, credit rating agencies and mortgage brokers, and greater oversight of the complex financial instruments that contributed to the economic crisis.

Officials said they want rules to eliminate conflicts of interest at credit rating agencies that gave top investment grades to the exotic and ultimately shaky financial instruments that have been a source of market turmoil. The core problem, they said, is that the agencies are paid by companies to help them structure financial instruments, which the agencies then grade.

“Until we deal with the compensation model, we’re not going to deal with the conflict of interest, and people are not going to have confidence that the ratings are worth relying on, worth the paper they’re printed on,” Mary L. Schapiro, who testified earlier this month before being confirmed by the Senate to head the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The following is your children's destiny and future:

Here is the quick cliche version: Your children are going to be creamed by Obama's 'sub-prime loans'.

For those that can read more than Obama's cliches of hope (which are not many people), here is the not so quick version:

You voted for a president that borrows money for hope. Borrowing rates (T-bonds) are good now, historic lows, so borrowing is not painful. But, when those bonds become due borrowing interest rates will skyrocket and the U.S. interest payments will balloon and the U.S. will be in the same predicament that sub-prime borrows are in now. The U.S. will not be able to pay down their 'mortgage of their children's future' and hence the only other option will be to pay huge interest payments. Lenders get first rights to money (the feds will not default) which means that your children will get the scraps left over. The rich get richer and your children's welfare and the U.S. infrastructure will be second or third class. Your children will make tax payments to pay interest payments to the super wealthy, mostly in Asia.

Of course, since a majority of Americans aren't working right now nor paying income taxes anyway, his plan being more political smoke and mirrors will ultimately fizzle.

That, you ignorant pre-teen, is a polite way of saying go and whack off. That is a polite way of saying: go forth and multiply. And that is a polite way of having sex and travel at the same time. In simple words that YOU can understand, that means: FU*CK OFF, a-hole headcase.

'Obamas definition of BOLD: A stimulus plan that begins in 2010 and gets rolled out slowly in increments over the course of the next 10 years. And tax cuts for working Americans! Of course, since a majority of Americans aren't working right now nor paying income taxes anyway, his plan being more political smoke and mirrors will ultimately fizzle.'

Where did you get this mis-information. Do you always show yourself to be so stupid. Read something besides Rush or Savage and maybe you will find the truth.

'Obama apparently doesn't understand the definition of 'right now' when it comes to a timeline of immediate economic aid and the dire need of many Americans. Right now doesn't mean 2010. It means TODAY.'

Again where did you get 2010---February is more on target. God you are stupid.

'Is this the same man I voted into office not 2 months ago? He does sport a nice smile though.'

You did not vote at all. You are to lazy, hitting on your cousins, chewing tobacco, watching NASCAR, drinking beer, collecting your welfare check and bitching while unwilling to do one solid thing to help. Besides being a liar you are an stupid redneck!

By the way, compost for brains, exactly what does Martin Luther King Day have to do with anything current? Where I am, it is January 25, 2009 MLK Day is January 15. So, you are behind the times as well as being out of touch with reality.

Well, well. Sounds like you guys are resolved to collect your welfare check.

And I shall remain resolved to remind you of the fact and how it will affect future generations.

Today, you helped steal 2.5 billion dollars from future generations of U.S. citizens.

Good luck.

No idea about NASCAR, but I look forward with glee to spending your hard-earned money on more beer and tobacco for my toothless redneck self. Also if could you please put in some overtime so I can get a new sofa. And do hurry up already, I haven't all year to wait around for this you know.

Share the wealth!

'Well, well. Sounds like you guys are resolved to collect your welfare check.'
That sounds more like you, you unemployed bum. I work on one of those ranches that produce the beef that REAL people eat.(I also have a university education. What is on your CV - welfare cheque pick-up?)My brother works in one of those factories that produce those Jesus Bombs that you so adore. My father used to drop those Jesus bombs. Too bad he didn't know where you or your seed pod progenitors had their roots. He could have napalmed them. Cooked you veggies real good.

'And I shall remain resolved to remind you of the fact and how it will affect future generations.'
You shall remain a complete idiot. We don't need to be reminded that fanatical dickhead zealots like you exist. Afterall, when looking at mankind, it has its share of complete idiots. As for the future generations - F*ck 'em. If you are an example, of what's to come, then everyone should get sterilized. We got stuck with our parent's problems. Our kids will get stuck with ours. That's the way the world works. Get used to it. None of your angst-ridden 'writing' will change it one iota.
By the way, dickweed, you have not once demonstrated HOW it (whatever 'it' is) will affect future generations. All you have done is sit and whine about things you have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROLL OVER. You are nothing more than a snivelling little monkey. Shut up and suffer in silence.

To Quote Oliver Cromwell: 'You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing lately. Depart I say: and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!'

Well, I understand your enthusiasm, but you don't get the point.

Obama has found a way to make payoffs and kickbacks like what you refer to and have the population with no advocate pay for it. That would be the most innocent of us, the unborn babies and children of the generation yet to come.

It seems like a real pisser thing to do having a bully like Obama piss all over your future even before you are born, but I guess that is the way welfare recipients like it.

P.S. - I like your camp. Obviously you are not too keen on the prospects of being on welfare. But, perhaps Obama will make a believer of you.

Yes, yes. That is what all credit-holic addicts say, right up to the day they go bust and declare bankruptcy. And then they still don't get it.

That is why there were more than one million personal US bankruptcies last year and why more than 2.3 million US homeowners faced foreclosure proceedings last year.

Because they did not get the idea of the grim reaper coming after them when they went into hock.

Obama is helping the grim reaper come after your children and you are helping him.

No, boll weevil, YOU don't get the point.

'That would be the most innocent of us, the unborn babies and children of the generation yet to come.'
Oh, you supercilious, sanctimonious sh*thead. You are basing a non-logical EMOTIONAL argument on things that haven't happened. Get RATIONAL, rutabaga. Here's a news flash for you - the future will never be today. It shall always remain the future. The past never happened. All there is, is this moment. I deal with the moment. You should pull your head out of your arse and breath some oxygen. That compost heap you call a gut produces noxious gasses, which you have inhaled for too long. Deal with reality, space cadet. Deal with the moment. Unborn babies and children of future generations to come will ALWAYS be unborn babies and children of the generation yet to come. Nothing will ever change that. Get some reality. Deal with today. Deal with your mental health issues. You are in serious need of professional help. Seek and ye shall find.

You still haven't. You try to slip by and not answer questions and postitions posed to you. It's called evasion. Deflection is another thing you attempt. It proves that you do not have a legitimate position or argument. You do not have the education or brainpower to carry on an intelligent conversation. You're so screwed in the carrot patch that there is no talking SENSE to you. Go and compost yourself. I'm done with you, headcase.

'You still haven't'

Actually, I did a while ago, but in reality:

The only possible way to attempt to convince a credit-holic addict of their sins is to simply let them go bust. That is the nature of an addiction.

So ... without further adieu ... your future awaits you.

no, lance in his stupidity meant what he said. The moron has a very limited grasp of language. How could he possibly understand a French word when he has minimal usage of his native tongue - English. No, like a parrot, he hears something and then spews it back out. He doesn't have the brains to comprehend, or understand that his usage is an abomination.
