Report: US, Cuba planning informal talks
Apr 27, 2009, 14:16 GMT
Washington - US and Cuban diplomats are planning informal meetings in the United States to discuss expanded relations between the two countries, The New York Times reported early Monday on its website, citing US officials speaking on condition of anonymity.
The US and Cuba do not have diplomatic relations, and the US has kept a trade embargo against Cuba for 47 years.
The planned meetings with Cuban officials would be held with the goal of possibly opening formal channels with Havana for later discussion of issues regarding relations between the US and the communist island and shared security issues, the Times reported, citing sources at both the State Department and the White House, none of whom were authorized to publicly discuss the matter.
One unnamed official quoted by the newspaper cautioned that the effort to open communications with the Cuban government might still fail.
