Obama won't release prisoner abuse photos (Roundup)

Washington - US President Barack Obama said Wednesday that he will oppose releasing dozens of photographs depicting the US military abusing prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Obama reversed an earlier Defence Department decision to make the photos public over concerns they could produce a backlash against US troops in those two countries.
'The most direct consequence of releasing them, I believe, would be to further inflame anti-American opinion and to put our troops in greater danger,' Obama said on the White House lawn.
The Defence Department had agreed to make the images public by the end of May following a successful lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union. But Obama intends to go back to court to argue their release could endanger national security.
'The president does not believe that the strongest case regarding the release of these photos was presented to the court,' White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.
The photos resulted from years of already concluded Pentagon investigations into potential mistreatment of prisoners, and would be reminiscent of the revelations of abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq that prompted worldwide outrage in 2004.
Obama said the photos were not as sensational as the Abu Ghraib scandal and would therefore not result in a better understanding of detainee abuse. He said his refusal to provide the photos does not indicate he does not take abuse seriously.
'It will not be tolerated,' he said.
The ACLU sharply criticized Obama for breaking a campaign promise while adding the release of the images was essential to ensure similar abuses will not take place in the future.
The Obama administration's adoption of the stonewalling tactics and opaque policies of the Bush administration flies in the face of the president's stated desire to restore the rule of law, to revive our moral standing in the world and to lead a transparent government,' Anthony D Romero, the ACLU's executive director, said.

Releasing the photos does nothing useful, and just extends the discussion needlessly. The facts are known, and the photos would add nothing. They would be nowhere as bad as Abu Ghraib.
The media wants the images to help them sell papers.
...whatever, but a far, far more likely scenario is that Obama is watching dems like Pelosi writhe in their own Frank Church/ MacCarthyist witch hunt having indicted themselves for being briefed on all of this about 40 times, and is throwing out a lifeline in gagging these photos. For eight years, the libnazi elite has been willing to compromise national security, but we are now supposed to believe they have gotten religion and are now on the path to rightousness.

The nation is now going through what Obama tried to avoid. He specifically stated that he wanted to look FORWARDS, rather than backwards. No one will profit from the current back-and-forth about 'who knew what'. There were Republicans who knew about extreme torture and said nothing - and today those same people would make the same statements as McCain against what they stood for earlier.
Pelosi was dumb to escalate the issue - Richard Haass and others are covering it well enough through books and reportage. Since there's always more information to come out, and a tendency to keep secrets in the name of National Security, there is no end to this.
(What Limbaugh stands for is getting the GOP into office at all costs, no matter who gets hurt. The GOP uses proxies like Limbaugh to do the dirty work, as well as idiots like SP4 on boards. The net effect is to make intelligent people defect from the GOP, and to turn instead to someone with class and intelligence - Obama.
