US minority population growing fast, government says

Washington - The United States' minority population, especially Hispanics, is growing at a fast pace and nearly half of children under five years were from a minority in 2008, the US Census Bureau revealed Thursday.
In July 2008, 104.6 million people were from minorities, or 34 per cent of the country's total population, an increase of 2.3 per cent from the previous year, the government data showed.
The Hispanic population grew faster than any other group, rising 3.2 per cent to 46.9 million in 2008. The segment has climbed by about one third since the start of this decade amid an influx of immigrants from Latin America.
People of Asian descent were the second-fastest growing group in the country, climbing 2.7 per cent from 2007 to 15.5 million. African Americans increased 1.3 per cent and majority whites increased just 0.2 per cent.
Hispanics are also much younger than the white population. The group averaged 27.7 years compared to a median age of 41.1 for whites.
Of children under five, minorities made up 47 per cent of the country's population in 2008, with 25 per cent being Hispanic, the Census Bureau found. Minority groups made up 44 per cent of children aged under 18.

Tru Limey...Hispanic is one of those terms...well...mexicans cooked up so we would not keep calling them Mexicans. True, we have other peoples of hispanic descent from central America, but we always just called them Mexicans too. It's like African-Americans, a name someone likes to be called as opposed to just plain-old black.
Hispanics goes all the way back to the Greeks. The term Hispanic is derived from Hispanicus, which derived from Hispania (Iberian Peninsula), both of them Latin terms. Hispania may in turn derive from Latin Hispanus (Spaniard), or from Greek Hispania (Spain) and Hispanos (Spanish, a Spaniard), probably from Celtiberian. The words Spain, Spanish, and Spaniard are of the same etymology as Hispanic, ultimately.

I do hope that you realise that complaining to the Editors is an exercise in frustration. They seem to enjoy, even promote the monster side of this site(eg. SP4 et al) and seem to be content to letting it slide in the intellectual discourse side. All I have to do to prove that point is to say, go look at the posts during the last US Federal Election. It violated all rules and tenets of this site. The Editors, of course, were nowhere to be seen. Some of us now call M&C Muck and Crud, for that is the vast majority of comments. SP4 himself violates, in almost every post the rules and tenets of this site. Especially in the personal attack department. Then he whines, when he gets some thrown back at him. As I have said to another poster, with whom I sometimes exchange Emails, is this is the Web, where nothing is real and no one really is who they say they are. (exception being SP4). View this as entertainment and nothing more. If you don't like it, change the channel. The programming is likely to be far better elsewhere.

SP, I despise political correctness. Anything positive about it is already covered by the concepts of common courtesy and respect for others feelings. At its worst it constitutes an attempt at thought control and a denial of freedom of speech. For in a democracy, where all opinions must be expressible, how can any stance be deemed more POLITICALLY 'correct' than another? More moderate, more civilised, or more intelligent perhaps. So you are at liberty to be as crass or bigoted as you wish, just as others are to ridicule and slate you for it.
I generally find it simplest to refer to people by whatever term they feel most comfortable with themselves. It's just as easy, more polite, and I don't care much one way or another really about someone's race or creed. I'm more interested in their viewpoints. As to their sexuality, so long as it doesn't involve minors, animals or the dead, and in the words of Mrs Patrick Campbell 'they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses,' then I feel that what two or more consenting adults get up to in private is entirely their own business.
Of course, almost everyone on these pages indulges in insult freely. It's part of the debate and a truly apposite retort can be very entertaining. The use of some terms may cause widespread offense and lead people to make assumptions about the extremity of the user's social and political opinions. I don't quite understand your ethnic terminology. Are 'Hispanics' people of Spanish or part Spanish descent, or simply Spanish 1st language speakers?
Anyway, if there are any wasps or rednecks out there who are alarmed at being outbred by other groups of Americans, well, the answer is in your own, er, ...hands!
