Report: Obama to nominate Hispanic woman for Supreme Court
May 26, 2009, 12:55 GMT
Washington - US President Barack Obama is set to nominate Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the US Supreme Court, the New York Times reported Tuesday.
The paper, cited officials in Washington as saying Obama had scheduled an announcement for 10.15 am (1415 GMT) in a move - if confirmed by the Senate - would make her the first person of Hispanic ethnic background to serve on the country's highest court.
Sotomayor, 54, is currently on the the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
She would replace Justice David H. Souter to become the second woman on the current court and just the third female ever on the Supreme Court.
The New York Times cited aides as saying that Obama reached his decision over the Memorial Day weekend, but only disclosed it to his advisors on Tuesday morning.
The paper noted that possibly her best-known ruling came in April 1995 concerning the professional sport of baseball when she issued an injunction against baseball club owners, effectively putting an end to a nearly eight-month-old strike.
