Obama ensnared in "flygate"

Jun 18, 2009, 16:49 GMT

Washington - It turns out US President Barack Obama's successful swat of a bothersome insect during a taped interview did not fly with animal rights groups.

Pressed by journalists, the animal advocates organization PETA decided to react - albeit with some humour - to Obama's quick handed killing of the fly, which was aired on television by CNBC.

'I guess it can't be said that President Obama wouldn't hurt a fly,' PETA wrote on its blog. 'The commander in chief was recently pestered by a fly during an interview. He swatted at the insect and killed the little guy instantly.'

In fairness to the president, he did warn the persistent fly. 'Get out of here,' Obama said.

But the insect's failure to heed the executive order resulted in its executive execution.

Obama snapped his right open palm onto the back of his left hand where the fly had landed. A split second later, the poor thing tumbled dead to a fancy White House rug.

Obama looked down and kicked his victim aside.

'That was pretty impressive, wasn't it?' Obama said to the praise of aides in the room. 'I got the sucker.' After the interview, Obama cleaned up the aftermath himself, using a tissue to dispose of the corpse.

PETA said it had no intention of making an issue of Obama punishing the unwelcome guest, but did so after numerous media inquires. The organization said it was sending the president a 'handy-dandy' bug catcher so future intruders can be captured and released outside.

'He isn't the Buddha,' PETA said of Obama. 'He's a human being, and human beings have a long way to go before they think before they act.'

'We support compassion for all animals, even the most curious, smallest, and least sympathetic ones,' the blog said.

This is the dumbest article ever.

Shame on m&c for posting such a pointless, worthless piece of reporting. Just shows how horrible your website/company is. I'd rather read about monkeys flinging their poo and licking their fingers after.

Shut your site down, it sucks.

...and PETA is not perfect, either. It is important to live one's life as best they can and not push it on others. PETA feels they are right and better than others becasue of it and that sort of ego is just as bad.

We should reserve the name 'flygate' for the president who gets caught with his zipper open. Applying the scientific name for the (White)housefly, Musca domestica var. alba, we come up with 'Musca-gate' would be less ambiguous.

Jason, you're a dork for giving a real opinion about this article.

Obama, keep killing the insects, you know there's more coming considering the global warming is increasing.

PETA, get a life, go pet your llama.

This was all a setup. Obama wants to show that little bug Kim Jong Il of N. Korea that in a moments notice that our exalted president could snap and squash that little bug KJI like well like a bug. So KJI better behave himself

There is a big swam of those lovable creatures down the steet feasting on road kill and other matter. Perhaps PETA would like to invite them to their next banquet. They should feel right at home. I wonder how many would survive.

..or that unnatural act you do daily with your Collie..certainly that rates a rant, eh? Don't worry, you can just tell PETA you confused the dog with your sister.

Clarification for SP4 ...Jun 22nd, 2009 - 17:20:03

The Collie was confused with SP4's wife. (in 'doggy style' their appearance differences are negligible. SP4's wife is only a slightly more hairy than the collie ... they shed about the same)
