Former US defence secretary Robert McNamara dies aged 93 (1st Lead)

Jul 6, 2009, 14:12 GMT

Washington - Robert McNamara, the former US defence secretary during the Vietnam War and later head of the World Bank, has died at the age of 93, the Washington Post reported Monday citing members of his family.

McNamara was a key planner of the Vietnam War, leading the Pentagon from 1961 to 1968 during the presidencies of John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

McNamara became the focal point for anti-war protests in the United States - the Vietnam War became known as 'McNamara's War.'

As the war and McNamara's tenure became more controversial, he was appointed by Johnson to serve as head of the World Bank, which he led from 1968 until 1981.

Before becoming defence secretary, McNamara had been the first non-family member to head the Ford Motor Company.

McNamara, who was born in San Francisco, died at his home in Washington. He leaves behind a wife and three children.

...who once said '...we don't have any idea what's going on' (the Johnson tapes) and then proceeded to conduct a war on that basis for the next five years.

Afterwards, he made a handsome profit apologizing for it.

Liberals - they just kill too many people.

Hey idiots stick, at least this man knew how to apologize for killing and maiming American soldiers for no specific purpose. Unlike the idiots that you supported, GWB, The Dick, Condi and Rummy.

McNarmara was an absolute failure at running that war. He knew absolutely nothing and dictated to the generals as if he did. This is aobut a man who could have saved tens of thousands of lives but chose not to. A miserable failure.

A complete and total 'miserable failure'. In the same league as GWB and Cheney. All three should be tried as war criminals, and put in jail---at least the two that are still living.
