Franken sworn in, fills final Senate place from 2008 election

Jul 7, 2009, 17:46 GMT

Washington - Al Franken was sworn in Tuesday as Minnesota's second US senator, filling the legislative chamber's final spot after his extremely tight victory in the state's 2008 election.

Franken, a former comedian, was declared the winner of Minnesota's Senate election only last week, more than six months after voters in the state went to the polls.

The state's highest court ruled that Franken won by 312 votes out of 2.9 million over incumbent Republican Senator Norm Coleman, after months of recounts and legal challenges.

Franken's victory gives Democrats 60 seats in the 100-member US Senate and could make it much easier for the party to push its priorities. Due to procedural rules in the chamber, major legislation typically requires a super majority of 60 votes to pass.

About time we got some humor in the Senate. I think the 60 number is funnier than all get out.

After 8 years of 'the Dick' and the 'Texas Village Idiot' anything is an improvement.

To SP4
No people in the world, not even the americans deserve what we had for the previous 8 years. They screwed up the worlds environment, The entire world economy, started 2 endless unwinable wars and destroyed all of americas respect and credability worldwide. And you wonder why the american people have elected a super majority. They elected them to undo the greed ridden policies of dick and george and co. (policies which profited nobody except dick and george and co)
SP4, now that rush limbau is the leader of the GOP and sean hannity is his
vice president do you see any future for your beloved party.
They seem to have no structure or message anymore except to try to block every change that the american people have overwhelmingly voted for.
But now they are screwed because not only are they yesterdays news (and bad news it was) but the dems have the super majority.
Run to the hills fat boy and join the militia. the commies are a commin.

The GOP, a party that lost it's balls. With Palin chucking in the towel, the party lost its ovaries, as well.
