Felicia downgraded to tropical storm as it nears Hawaii
Aug 9, 2009, 20:02 GMT
Washington - A storm on track to slam into Hawaii has weakened to a tropical storm, the Central Pacific Hurricane Centre said Sunday.
Tropical Storm Felicia was continuing to weaken as it headed toward the islands of Hawaii and Maui, where it was expected to arrive Monday.
Felicia was located about 890 kilometres east of Hilo, Hawaii at 1800 GMT. It had sustained winds of 88 kilometres per hour.
The storm was expected to bring strong surf to the islands. State emergency officials had blocked beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii and were readying the city of Hilo for the storm's arrival, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.
