Teen birth rates remain higher in US than rest of developed world

Aug 12, 2009, 19:29 GMT

Washington - The birth rate among US teenagers is twice the average for all developed nations and has increased in recent years, according to a report released Wednesday.

The current US rate is 42 births for every 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19, while the overall rate for developed countries is 21 per 1,000, the internationally-known non-governmental research organization, Population Reference Bureau (PRB), reported.

Noting the especially high teen birth rate among the US Hispanic population, the PRB's Linda A Jacobsen called for special attention to be focussed on the country's increasingly diverse youth population in terms of education and training.

'By 2050 almost 40 per cent of the population will be Hispanic. The ability of this increasingly diverse youth population to obtain education skills and secure employment will be critical to the US's future economic growth and our ability to meet the challenges of an aging population,' Jacobsen said.

The US teen birth rate compares to that of the United Kingdom, with 24 births per 1,000 girls. Italy and Japan have only 5 per 1,000, Jacobsen said.

The US rate dropped by one-third to 40.5 from 1991 to 2005, but data from 2007 suggested a reversal of this trend, the report said.

US government data from 2007 showed the birth rate among Hispanic teens in the US to be 81.7 per 1,000 girls. The rate for African-American teens was 64.3 and the rate for non-Hispanic whites was 27.2, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Teen pregnancy in the US often leads to high-risk pregnancy, lower educational achievement, unemployment and poverty. These risks are amplified by the aging US population and the changing demographic.

...the tiny mind above, once again (and again, and again...) draws a wide conclusion from a very narrow set of facts. Procreation is the natural state of all life. The fact that America happens to have a certain race and ethnic population that prizes family over other pursuits escapes the average socialist's narrow mindedness, who seems to think what is good for one person must be applied to all persons, as opposedd to the 'pursuit of Happiness' as stated in the Declaration a document they've all forgotten. They are unable to differentiate between a natural state of humanity and what constitutes a legitimate health issue, a telling fact in the face of an immenent take-over of health care making it a vehicle for social engineering. Just another stellar example of the myth that liberals embrace open-mindedness falling flat on its face.

Yeah - teenagers need to value family over other pursuits alright. Maybe the low moral values and access to so much x-rated TV, videos, music, etc., is more prevalent in the US than in other developed countries. Celebrities in the US are looked up to way too much as well with their constant changing partners, never marrying and having a kid with every one they bed.

God, I can't believe you don't get tired of being so wrong, but being so stupid does that to you. My point was not to take away peoples right to procreate, my point was that instead of leaving it up to their faith, they need to talk with their daughters and get them birth control when needed. You idiots on the right never get the fact that if you are going to preach that you are supposedly have such great 'family values' then your daughters go out and get knocked up, or the fathers cheat on their mothers, or chase boys, or toe tap. You are just too stupid to get it. Have you ever had your IQ tested, let me guess 55 - 60?

TruebritAug 13th, 2009 - 20:01:04

If the US experience is anything like our own, it is social and economic deprivation and lack of education rather than race that is the primary determining factor in teen pregnancy rates. We have created a huge sub-class of people who can't get work because they are too ill-educated and limited in their aspirations even to know how to go and look for it, and don't want it anyway. Social provision has backfired badly in my country. There are many people on sink estates that have never worked in their lives because they are, quite literally, unemployable. Three generations of single mothers, all under forty-five, on anti-depressants and cheap booze; with a floating population of transient fathers moving in and out of their lives and houses, adding another kid doomed to squalor, ignorance and criminality as they float by.

Life in these ghettos, urban and rural, revolves around dodging the cops, 'reality' TV, cheating the benefit authorities, drugs, gratuitous violence, all day binges, routine domestic abuse, muggings, the occasional murder or suicide, and a deep, sullen hatred and frustration born of an inchoate glimmer of self-awareness. A vague sense that something is horribly wrong: An inarticulate feeling of utter inadequacy and resentment of those who are 'in authority,' and a consequent overcompensating posturing bravado.

Yet these are people of normal intelligence, equipped with their full quota of human feelings. The 'system' has betrayed them. Above all, in the matter of a good basic education, the teaching of respect for others and themselves, and some concept of self discipline: By posing, f*ckwitted, middle class socialists with their theories of progressive and egalitarian societies: And posing, f*ckwitted middle class rightists with their theories of “economic necessity” and “the devil take the hindmost”. Left and right are to an extent both responsible for the economic deficit. The educational one is a child purely of the left.

Nothing much can be expected of little Darren. Oh no! He's from a 'disadvantaged' background. His ignorance must be 'respected.' Little Darren is living proof of our 'unequal' society, like a bloody badge or token to be displayed. Can't correct him if he behaves badly. That would be 'destructive of his self esteem,' which is 'sooo important, ya.' Can't allow competitive behaviour, either academically or in sports, that's 'elitist.' Everyone must always come first, or those who don't will be 'traumatised,' poor things!

So little Darren, uncurbed, without experience of any authority he can respect, taught nothing except that he is a victim and that nothing is his fault, that anything he does is good enough, and that he has many 'rights,' but no responsibilities, comes a bit unstuck. Gets bored, plays hookie, and gets 'excluded' from school because he's disruptive. But that's OK because he learns some solid, practical skills on the street. At 12 he's hot-wiring cars, and carrying a chiv like the rest of his gang. His mam and current stepdad, Sharon and big Darren don't give a flying f*ck. They had the same education. At 14 or 15, little Darren and his girl, Kylie, produce their 1st kid. Their lodestone is a council flat. And anyway, Kylie wants a 'baybeee.' For three days she'll be the centre of attention. For the next 20 years, producing brat after brat by at least three different men will be her route to more state handouts, bigger houses and the justification for her existence. Like mam before her, she knows that the surest way to better accommodation and more income is to breed her way into them. Within the incredibly narrow horizons her upbringing has allowed, she can envisage no alternative. Bring on the next generation!

Hope is what the people I am talking about above have had stolen from them, without their even knowing it. The problem of the 'underclass,' perhaps 3 million of them in the UK, is that they are unable to perceive the essential sterility of lives based in large part on their fertility. They see no other way. This is an educational deficit and an economic one, both. It's victims are of every race and creed.

It's not about 'family values' vs 'sex education' or access to contraception or abortion. These people are not tories or labour voters or, in the US, democrats or republicans. In fact, hardly any of them vote at all: But until the problem they embody is addressed successfully, these chavs, dole scum, white trailer trash, black ghetto trash, whatever we call them, you will continue to read about high teenage pregnancy rates.

Have any of you ever thoughtAug 14th, 2009 - 17:00:55

That maybe it isn't the kids fault? Yes they are at the stage of life called the Age of Raging Hormones. BUT and that is a bloody big but, kids are sexually developing earlier than ever before. Most of this can be trace to the chemicals, growth hormones, and whatever other chemical crap that is in the food supply. The water is contaminated with medications flushed down the toilet. Anti-biotics, which are over-used, have been found in drinking water. Birth control pills, which are nothing more than sex hormones are dumped by the ton-full every day. It has been found in the drinking weater. These hormones are not/cannot be filtered out at the purification plant. When eight and nine-year-old children are sexually mature, then don't blame the kid. Blame yourselves for your chemical way of life.
Now, before some idiot tells me to take a pill and calm down, think about it, people. Do some real hard thinking and research. Then point the finger where it should be aimed at: you, the chemical companies and your drugged way of life. American television is an in-your-face pharmacopeia of medicines for the CONSUMING public. It is one more commodity of commerce, not your health. With the plethora of drug advertisement on the idiot box, it appears that America is one very sick society. With all those diseases and conditions, I am in wonder of how this nation is healthy enough to partake in its greatest disease: the passion for dropping bombs, and blowing bullsh*t on sites such as this.

READ IT AGAIN!

'...knowing the right thing to do is still not doing it.'

The whole point is that these kids don't know the 'right thing to do'. Even worse, in their world, from their perspective, getting knocked up for a living IS the right thing to do! In fact, even that is not a conscious choice in most cases. It happens as the earth goes round the sun. Bog standard! Six feet long and two yards wide!

'If someone is trying to tell me these kids do not either know they're going to get pregnant, or cannot get contraception...in this day and age, that is a total crock of crap.'

Of course they know! This is a matter of indifference to an inevitability. It's run of the mill!

'Permissive or non-existant parenting, no limits on kids, lack of supervision and just plain stupidity fuel this mess.'

That's just what I've been saying, you prick! But it's not a matter of choice. The left spout a lot of crap about inequality, but it's their flawed educational agenda that lies at the bottom of this mess: Along with the right's deterministic acceptance that 'there always will be people of this sort'; and that economic necessity dictates the fact.

'Heck, MOST junior high schools in the USA have contraception programs and sex ed starts in what?..the third grade???'

And over here too!

'This idea that education is lacking is pure hogwash. The left in America runs to this excuse anytime their social engineering fails, which is most of the time.'

Mechanistically, education is not lacking. I fail to see how I could have expressed my point more simply. This is inadvertent 'social engineering'. READ IT AGAIN! If you have specific points to make, or want me to expand on anything, ASK!

'Curious too, in that parochial schools have about 5% of the teen pregnancies that public schools have.'

Well done, Einstein!

'I guess we can feed that born again insult into the all important you (not Trubrit)-are-just-a-little-more-than full of crap.'

Eh? Can you, or anyone construe?

'I guess, as H.Ross Perot once correctly said, that it's just a little too much to expect of the liberal left's intelliguista to go to someone who is actually successful and ASK how THEY manage to do it, eh?'

The entire point, SP, is that only a minority, a disappearingly small minority of the people I'm referring to, ever manage to escape from their background. It's OK for the right to point up isolated examples and say 'look, s/he came from a sink pit and see what s/he's done'. The mere fact that billionaires are a tad thin on the ground indicates that unusual talent, luck, and application are needed. Most of us achieve according to our origins; the 'value added' reflects where we started from. It's the same for the underclass: With one crucial difference. In their case, little if any 'value' is ever 'added'. Not only do they underachieve absolutely, they do so relatively, too. Born in the ghetto, live in the ghetto, breed in the ghetto, die in the ghetto: And the ghetto remains a ghetto!

Until the overriding problems of ingorance, dependency, life-expectations and criminality are addressed, the entire culture challenged, so it will remain!

..America is AWASH in studies about teen pregnancy! For seventy years, each generation has studied the obvious and then promptly runs to the conclusion that all girls don't use birth control, even if it's available and that little boys stick their dicks in them way to early anyway, and if we just 'educate' them and provide these things, it'll all go away.

Yes, Tony, we know poverty plays a role,(ya think?) so from the left who supposedly holds class in contempt we get the worst class distinction ever in the fact that they want poor people to just abort or adopt or something these upscale libnazi yuppies would NEVER condescend to do with their own little princesses. The president's science advisor has, in the past, even advocated population control via chemical seeding in drinking water, but that's another whole story.

Trubrit, comment all you want about billionaires but I respect the one's opinions that rose from true poverty, and would have to ask why THEIR opinions are not valued more than anyone else's.

The whole picture comes down to personal values and morality and some folks just need some. I've seem poor people who are not on drugs, do not live in squalor, are honest, upright citizens with meager means and these poor usually lift themselves above poverty in one generation. Like H. Ross Perot says, let's study success for a change and see if we can apply that instead of failure. Dennis Miller was right when he said anyone who speaks that much truth would never be elected president.

I guess THAT would be the REAL audacity of hope, eh?

Professor Sh*tpile (good handle for you!) I worked in BC for five years, repeatedly walked into the hotel room, turned on the TV, saw some teenage fat chick getting groped by what looked like Jerry Garcia's firends, thought I was getting free porn with the room cost and then the words would appear on the screen 'Canadian Public Television' so I think we can file you comments under your personal familiar heading 'you-are-just-a-little-more-than-full of' crap.

As for the rest of you simpering libnazi yuppie dildo metrosexuals, keep up the good work!
