Sep 2, 2009, 17:04 GMT
Washington - Former US congressman James Traficant was freed from prison on Wednesday after serving more than seven years behind bars on corruption charges.
Traficant, 68, departed the Federal Medical Centre in Rochester, Minnesota, but still must serve three of years probation, said Felicia Ponce, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Prisons in Washington.
The Democrat represented the state of Ohio from 1985 until July 2002, when he was expelled from Congress one week before the sentencing. He had been convicted months earlier for racketeering, bribery and tax evasion.
The flamboyant Democrat was known for his unique mop of hair and rants on the floor of House of Representatives on subjects ranging from income tax to Wonderbras.
