Obama official resigns amid 'smear campaign'
Sep 6, 2009, 12:43 GMT
Washington - An advisor to US President Barack Obama on environmental issues resigned on Sunday after sharp criticism from members of the opposition Republican party, local media reported.
Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Van Jones, said he did not want to burden his colleagues in the administration by fighting a 'vicious smear campaign' that he claimed was designed to distract from the United States' ongoing debate on health reform and renewable energy.
Jones has been the target of complaints about his political views due to his admittedly radical leftist past as well as for insults to Republicans.
The debate intensified when his signature was found on a petition calling for investigations into whether there was government involvement in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US.
