Oct 16, 2009, 16:14 GMT
Washington - The US Coast Guard was searching Friday for the pilot of an F-16 fighter jet following a mid-air collision off the coast of South Carolina, the military said.
Captain Nicholas Giglio went missing after his plane collided with another F-16 Fighting Falcon late Thursday during training exercises over the Atlantic Ocean, a spokesman at Shaw Air Force Base said. The pilot of the second plane landed safely at an airbase near Charleston.
The accident took place at about 8:30 pm (0030 GMT) about 65 kilometres off the coast of South Carolina.
The Coast Guard vessels and aircraft were combing the area near the incident but have been unable to locate Giglio, a spokesman said.
