Quake hits in ocean west of California
Jan 11, 2010, 10:56 GMT
Washington - An earthquake with strength of 6.5 hit offshore northern California late Saturday, about 35 kilometres west of the coastal town of Ferndale, the US Geological Geological Survey said late Saturday.
The quake hit about 0028 GMT Sunday, or 4:28 pm local time, about 400 kilometres north of San Francisco, in a sparsely-populated area of the state.
There were no reports of damage to the town of Ferndale, population 1,200.
The 6.5 measurement on the Richter scale would indicate a serious earthquake. The quake was about 16 kilometres under the ocean surface.
The incident was followed within half an hour by another shudder of 3.6.
