Kite surfer killed by sharks off Florida
Feb 4, 2010, 14:41 GMT
Washington - A kite surfer was fatally mauled by sharks off the east coast of the US state of Florida, local media reported.
Stephen Howard Schafer, 38, was kite surfing off an unsupervised part of the coast in Martin County Wednesday when he was attacked by sharks, the Palm Beach Post reported, citing emergency services.
A lifeguard from a nearby beach spotted Schafer in the water, bleeding and unconscious, and paddled out to recover him on a rescue board.
The victim received emergency first aid for multiple bites on the beach before being rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries the same day, a report on local television channel WPTV said.
Florida recorded 32 unprovoked shark attacks in 2008, the highest among the US states. The state's last fatal attack was in 2005.
