Michelle Obama takes centre stage, tackles childhood obesity
Feb 9, 2010, 17:43 GMT
Washington - US First Lady Michelle Obama stepped into the limelight Tuesday to lead a campaign that will seek ways of reducing childhood obesity, which affects nearly one third of children in the United States.
The new public awareness campaign marks one of the highest-profile policy assignments yet for the first lady since President Barack Obama took office in January of last year.
The Obamas hope to improve coordination within the government and work with parents and communities to improve nutrition, exercise and other habits of US children.
Childhood obesity was 'one of the most urgent health issues that we face in this country,' Barack Obama said. The aim of the new campaign was 'to help parents make good decisions about allowing their children to be active and eating healthier.'
