Last serving Kennedy announces plans to retire from US Congress
Feb 12, 2010, 13:12 GMT
Washington - US Congressman Patrick Kennedy, the last member of the Kennedy clan currently serving in the US legislature, will not seek re-election later this year.
Kennedy's statement, leaked in a video clip on the website Youtube, was heavily reported Friday by US media.
In the clip, Kennedy, 42, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1988, representing the state of Rhode Island.
He is the son of US senator Ted Kennedy, who died last year, and the nephew of assassinated US president John F Kennedy. His departure would mark the first time no member of his family has served in US federal office in half a century.
'Having spent two decades in politics, my life has taken a new direction and I will not be a candidate for re-election this year,' said Kennedy in the video clip. An official statement is expected Sunday.
