US militia members charged in plot to attack police funeral
Mar 29, 2010, 18:43 GMT
Washington - Nine members of an extremist US militia group were indicted Monday with plotting to blow up a police funeral and other plans to wage 'armed conflict' against the government, the US Justice Department said.
Calling themselves the Hutaree militia, the group allegedly hatched a plan to kill a police officer in the northern state of Michigan and then attack the funeral procession at which colleagues would gather.
Attorney General Eric Holder called it an 'insidious plan' by a 'dangerous organization that today stands accused of conspiring to levy war against the United States.'
The nine defendants - six from Michigan, two from Ohio and one from Indiana - were indicted by a grand jury in federal court in Detroit. They face up to life in prison if convicted.
The militia was led by 45-year-old David Brian Stone, who among others enlisted the help of his wife and two sons. Stone had begun gathering materials for improvised explosives, taught members how to use them and was planning to start searching for a target in April.
