Bill to lift travel restrictions to Cuba passes first hurdle
Jun 30, 2010, 23:48 GMT
Washington - A bill that would lift travel restrictions for US citizens to Cuba passed its first legislative hurdle in a congressional committee Wednesday.
The House of Representatives' Agriculture Committee voted 25-20 to approve the measure, which would also end limits on US exports of agricultural products.
The long-standing travel ban largely prohibits travel to the communist island except for those with family in Cuba and some exceptions for educational or other purposes. It is part of a wider embargo put in place a few years after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.
President Barack Obama had already eased restrictions on family members visiting relatives in Cuba.
The measure must be considered by the House Foreign Affairs Committee before it can be taken up by the broader Congress. Similar efforts have failed in the past.
