Priest charged with embezzling a million for hotels, male escorts
Jul 6, 2010, 22:17 GMT
Washington - A Roman Catholic priest in Connecticut was charged Tuesday with stealing 1.3 million dollars from his parish for hotels, restaurants, clothes and even male escorts.
The Reverend Kevin Gray, 64, faces first-degree larceny charges. His alleged spending spree began seven years ago at the Sacred Heart Parish located in Waterbury, Connecticut.
Gray was well-known among the community and reportedly fessed up to the illicit indulgences after the Waterbury police launched an investigation into his suspicious spending record May 27.
He allegedly told police he began stealing the money once he 'had grown to hate being a priest' because the archdiocese had given him the 'worst church assignments' where he would 'have to fix problems made by the previous priests,' according to the Hartford Courant.
Gray also said he felt anger over the church's stance on homosexuality, as he lived with a gay lover and ordered male escorts through Campus Escorts in New York.
