Energy ministers from world's largest polluters meet in Washington
Jul 20, 2010, 0:21 GMT
Washington - Energy ministers and business leaders from 21 countries were gathering in the US capital this week to improve cooperation on fostering greener forms of power around the world.
The two-day Washington meeting, starting Monday, comes amid an ongoing deadlock between the world's biggest polluters over a new global accord on cutting greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.
Together, the 21 countries represented in Washington make up about 80 per cent of global economic output. The gathering was to focus specifically on renewable energy sources, a topic on which there is more agreement than the broader struggle to tackle climate change.
The meeting's goal was to 'accelerate the world's transition to clean energy, engaging governments and stakeholders with this important challenge,' said David Sandalow, the US Energy Department's assistant secretary for policy and international affairs.
