Washington - US federal authorities have charged a 26-year- old Chicago man with attempting to support terrorism by planning to travel to Somalia to join a terrorist group, the Justice Department said Wednesday.
Shaker Masri, a US citizen, was arrested Tuesday just hours before he was scheduled to leave Chicago, the Justice Department said. He is also charged with attempting to provide material support through the use of a weapon of mass destruction. Both are felony offenses.
Masri has been under investigation for 18 months. Agents used undercover operatives and surveillance of Masri's telephone with the approval of a court to gain evidence, the department said.
The department said he actively planned to join al-Qaeda and the Somalia-based group al-Shabaab, and had be increasingly pressing his desire to participate in a 'jihad.'
