New White House spokesman says he works for Obama and press
Feb 16, 2011, 18:12 GMT
Washington - Incoming White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday in his first briefing that he hoped to juggle a dual role of representing US President Barack Obama's interests while helping the media better report stories on government.
'The press secretary is a unique position within the White House,' Carney told reporters. 'I do work for the president, but I'm also here to help the press.'
Carney was the Washington bureau chief for Time magazine before joining the White House in 2009 as spokesman for Vice President Joe Biden. His promotion to Obama's press secretary comes after Robert Gibbs exited the role on Friday.
During his first briefing, Carney fielded questions on Obama's domestic budget proposals, Egypt's transition to democracy and demonstrations in the wider Middle East.
