Washington - US authorities are close to filing charges against former presidential candidate John Edwards, alleging he improperly used campaign funds to cover up an affair, according to reports Wednesday.
The New York Times, citing a source close to Edwards, reported the Justice Department has decided to move forward with the charges. An indictment could be handed down within days.
Edwards, 57, has been under investigation for two years stemming from the alleged diversion of 1 million dollars of donations to his 2008 presidential run toward support for his mistress. He later admitted to fathering a daughter with the woman while he was married.
The affair effectively ruined his public image and political career. His wife, Elizabeth, was suffering from cancer at the time and died in December, leaving him to parent his two youngest children alone.
