New York Times gets first female executive editor
Jun 2, 2011, 20:45 GMT
New York - The New York Times is getting the first female executive editor in its 160-year history, the prestigious newspaper announced Thursday.
Jill Abramson, 57, is replacing Bill Keller, 62, who served in the position for eight years, and who will revert to being a full time staff writer on the paper. The change , which takes effect in early September, comes as the New York Times forges ahead with a new initiative to charge for online access as a way to compensate for the decline in print subscriptions.
Abramson has been the paper's managing editor since 2003, and was previously the publication's Washington bureau chief and an investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal. She has also managed the paper's online operations.
'It's meaningful to me,' Abramson said of her historic appointment. 'You stand on the shoulders of those who came before you, and I couldn't be prouder to be standing on Bill's shoulders.'
