Trapped Colorado logger amputates toes

San Francisco - A logger in Colorado was forced to cut off his own toes when his foot became stuck under his trailer in a remote forest area, ABC News reported Thursday.
Jon Hutt, 61, was attempting to log some firewood near the town of Montrose when the truck trailer slipped backwards and trapped his foot. Realizing he had no hope of extricating himself or getting help, he took just half an hour to decide to amputate his toes using his 8-centimetre-long pocket knife.
'I wanted to do it before I went into shock or dropped the knife or something like that,' he said. 'So I started cutting. I cut some, and then it was pretty painful, so I stopped to take a breath or two, and keep cutting until I finally got it cut off.'
Once he had severed the toes he wrapped his foot in his shirt and drove his truck out of the forest to where he had cellphone reception to call an ambulance.
Hutt's experience was reminiscent of the ordeal of Aron Ralston, whose amputation of his arm in a Utah canyon was the inspiration of the Oscar-nominated film 127 Hours.
