Power comes back after massive California blackout
Sep 10, 2011, 13:53 GMT
Los Angeles - Millions of residents of southern California got electrical power back Friday, after a massive blackout hit southern California late Thursday, officials said.
Coinciding with heightened terrorism concerns ahead of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the outage prompted fears that the region's electricity supply had been targeted by saboteurs. But Arizona Public Service said that the outage was triggered by a technician at a substation who removed a piece of monitoring equipment, tripping circuit breakers on the high transmission power lines that feed to southern California.
Power returned to some 2 million users some 12 hours after the blackout sent the region into chaos as traffic lights went out just as Thursday's rush hour began.
