Mass pig rustling reported in the US
Sep 25, 2011, 13:20 GMT
Washington - Pigs have been disappearing by the hundreds in the Midwest of the United States in what appears to be a series of pig rustling crimes, the New York Times reported Sunday.
The pigs, some weighing as much as grown men, have been reported stolen from farms in various states including Iowa and Minnesota.
The drastic increase in pork prices could be the reason behind the thefts, experts have speculated, saying in difficult times pigs are comparable to gold and copper.
It is unclear however how the thieves are cashing in on their booty, as many farmers sell their animals directly to meat processors. And anyone showing up to a swine auction with a several hundred animals would certainly attract attention.
Police however have come up with very few leads. Pigs 'all look alike,' the Times quoted an Iowa sheriff as saying.
