Police arrest dozens in ouster of Occupy Wall Street tent city
Oct 25, 2011, 18:20 GMT
San Francisco - Police arrested dozens of protestors Tuesday when they moved in to dismantle a tent city set up by Occupy Wall Street protesters outside Oakland's city hall.
Oakland police chief Howard Jordan said his forces had arrested 75 protesters in an operation that began at 4:30 am in which riot police used tear gas and bean bag rounds to disperse the camp.
The raid involved around 200 police officers and it took about 20 minutes to clear the camp, he said.
The tent town was one of the most prominent and closely watched in the United States. It had grown to include around 150 tents over the past two weeks, and had pathways made of wooden pallets connected to a kitchen, garden, medical station and an area for children to play.
But city officials had repeatedly threatened to oust the protestors, citing rat problems, public safety and hygiene issues, and disturbances to local businesses.
'I am very pleased with the way things went,' Jordan said at a news conference. 'In the end, I think we allowed people to exercise their rights to free speech and free assembly.'
