USS Cole suspect's lawyer asks for year to prepare trial
Nov 9, 2011, 19:12 GMT
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba - Defence lawyers for the man suspected of masterminding the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole Wednesday asked for a full year to prepare for his trial.
Saudi-born Abd al-Rahim Hussayn Muhammad al-Nashiri, 46, was arraigned in the military tribunal court at the US Naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, but he declined to say he was guilty or not guilty, opting to do so at a later time.
Despite the absence of a plea, his lawyers proposed that the trial begin on November 9, 2012, saying they needed a year to prepare an adequate defence. The military prosecutors however proposed February 2 as the starting date of the trial.
The court recessed after a morning of sparring between defence and prosecution over alleged violation of attorney-client privilege by military officials who, Nashiri's lawyers said, seized Nashiri's legal papers from his cell.
