Massive Titanic sale planned
Jan 5, 2012, 23:20 GMT
New York - A massive auction of over 5,000 artifacts from the doomed maiden voyage of the Titanic will take place in April to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the 'unsinkable' ship's first and only Atlantic crossing, it was announced Thursday.
The April 11 sale by Guernsey's auction house aims to sell all 5,000 items in one lot so as to preserve the integrity of the historic collection, which was valued at 189 million dollars in 2007.
The items were collected by the salvage company RMS Titanic Inc on eight separate diving missions to the liner, which sank in over 4,000- metre deep water in April 1912, killing 1,517 of the 2,223 people on board.
The items to be sold include passenger clothing and jewelry, pristine place settings and even a 17-ton slab of the ship's hull.
