Inch by inch, Russian tanker slogs through Alaskan ice
Jan 11, 2012, 0:49 GMT
Washington - A Russian tanker is trying to make the first maritime winter fuel delivery through sea ice in Alaska history as it inches through the frozen Bering Sea behind a US Coast Guard icebreaker.
The painstakingly slow effort aims to deliver fuel to the frozen city of Nome, Alaska, The New York Times reported from Nome on Tuesday.
The Renda is bringing 1.3 million gallons of emergency fuel to a city whose snow-covered houses and sport utility vehicles need power - and it is unclear whether it will ever arrive. The city has enough fuel to last until March, the Times reported.
The Coast Guard vessel is cutting its way forward to forge a path for the tanker Renda as a record cold spell has pushed temperatures down to minus 40 degrees celsius in its destination city.
