Manchester, New Hampshire - Loud cheers and a standing ovation followed projections by broadcasters that Mitt Romney would win the New Hampshire Republican presidential primary on Tuesday.
But David Stapleford, a Romney supporter, told dpa that he was surprised tha Romney hadn't done better. Polls last week had projected a 47-per-cent win for Romney, but CNN projected only a 36- per-cent win for the former Massachusetts governor.
Polls closed at 8 pm (0100 GMT), but formal results were just trickling in. Romney supporters had gathered at a Romney election night party at Southern New Hampshire University.
Exit polls taken by CNN gave Romney 36 per cent of the vote, followed by US Congressman Ron Paul with 23 per cent, former ambassador to China Jon Huntsman with 18 per cent, former speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich with 11 per cent, former US senator Rick Santorum with 10 per cent and Texas governor Rick Perry with 1 per cent.
