Romney concedes South Carolina victory to Gingrich
Jan 22, 2012, 1:14 GMT
Washington - Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, Saturday conceded victory to his chief Republican rival Newt Gingrich in the scramble for South Carolina's voters in the Republican presidential primary.
But he said he was still in the race and looked forward to the long race ahead before the November presidential elections, when the nominee will face off against Democratic President Barack Obama.
Romney congratulated Gingrich and the other rivals 'for a hard-fought campaign,' in broadcast remarks from his headquarters at Columbia, South Carolina. 'We are now three contests into a long primary season.'
Although only 15 per cent of the South Carolina votes had been counted, four US broadcasters and other major media have declared Gingrich the winner based on exit polls.
Former US Senator Rick Santorum won the Iowa caucus and Romney won the New Hampshire primary vote earlier this month.
