BACKGROUND: Major dates on the road to US presidential elections

Washington - US Republicans are making their way through a series of votes to decide their nominee for president, who will face off against Democratic President Barack Obama on November 6.
After the South Carolina Republican primary on Saturday, these events lie ahead, including primaries and caucuses:
- January 31: Florida
- February 4: Nevada and in Maine
- February 7: Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri
- February 28: Arizona, Michigan
- March 6: 'Super Tuesday,' with primaries in more than 10 states
- March-June: Voting continues until June 26 in Utah
Party conventions:
- August 27-30: Republican convention in Tampa Bay, Florida
- September 3-6: Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina
Other important dates:
- October 3: First of three televised debates between Republican candidate and President Barack Obama
- November 6: Presidential and congressional elections
- January 20, 2013: Presidential inauguration
