Gingrich headed for big win in South Carolina
Jan 22, 2012, 2:25 GMT
Washington - Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the US House of Representatives, was headed for a 41-per-cent upset win in South Carolina's primary for the Republican presidential nomination.
With two-thirds of the official vote counted, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who had been favoured to win until just a few days ago, held 27 per cent; former US senator Rick Santorum had 18 per cent; and Texas Congressman Ron Paul had 13 per cent, according to CNN and MSNBC broadcasters.
The southern state was the third primary in the race.
Romney won the New Hampshire primary and Santorum won the Iowa caucus, both held earlier this month. The next one is in Florida on January 31.
