Former CIA agent charged with disclosing secrets to journalists
Jan 23, 2012, 19:34 GMT
Washington - A former US intelligence agent was charged Monday with sharing classified documents with journalists and disclosing the names of two secret agents.
John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer, allegedly revealed the name of a covert CIA officer and also identified another officer involved in interrogating terrorist suspect Abu Zubaydah at the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Information he provided to a journalist was then passed on to defence lawyers for Guantanamo detainees who used it to take photographs of the agents and obtain information used in their legal filings.
Kiriakou also faces charges of lying to CIA officers about the contents of a book he wrote about his years with the agency.
He faces four charges, which each carry a prison term between five and 10 years and a maximum fine of 250,000 dollars.
