Obama pushes energy plans in Nevada
Jan 27, 2012, 12:17 GMT
Washington - US President Barack Obama on Thursday said he plans to open up 38 million acres for oil exploration in the Gulf of Mexico.
Speaking in Las Vegas, Nevada, he expanded on pledges made in Tuesday's State of the Union address, which focused on bolstering US manufacturing and energy production.
The announcement also follows Republic criticism earlier this week of Obama's cancellation of plans to construct the so-called Keystone Pipeline, which was planned to run from western Canada's oil sands production to the Gulf of Mexico.
GOP lawmakers argued that the project would have brought much-needed jobs to a weak US economy.
Obama is swinging through a number of states to bolster his state of the union message, in which he took strong aim at the growing economic inequality for the US middle class.
The choice of Nevada to make the announcement dovetailed with Obama's re-election strategy, as Republicans will be holding caucuses to choose their Republican presidential nominee on February 4.
