Report: More than 200 arrested in California Occupy protest
Jan 29, 2012, 23:03 GMT
San Francisco - More than 200 protesters from the Occupy Wall Street movement were arrested in Oakland, California, late Saturday after they broke into City Hall, and set an American flag on fire, the Oakland Tribune reported.
It was the first major clash between protesters and police since November, as demonstrators threw bottles, metal pipes, rocks and spray cans at police, who responded with tear gas.
Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said 'This particular faction of Occupy ... they're very violent,' adding that the weekly marches prevent police from patrolling other parts of the city.
In November, demonstrators shuttered the port of Oakland - one of the largest gateways of Chinese goods into the United States - following a police crackdown on the Occupy Oakland camp and after the authorities disbanded other camps in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The Occupy Wall Street movement was launched on September 17 to protest growing economic inequality in the United States.
