Romney opens wide lead in early Florida count

Wasington - Mitt Romney enjoyed a large advantage over leading rival Newt Gingrich in early vote counting from Tuesday's Republican presidential primary in Florida.
With 45 per cent of the vote counted, Romney had 49 per cent to Gingrich's 30 per cent, with Rick Santorum at 12 per cent and Ron Paul at 7 per cent.
Voting in Florida's peninsula ended at 7 pm (0000 Wednesday GMT), which has the bulk of the state's population. Voting in Florida's north-western Panhandle region continues until 8 pm (0100 Wednesday GMT), when broadcasters are expected to issue exit poll results.
