Feb 1, 2012, 1:19 GMT
Washington - Major television news networks including CNN, Fox News and MSNBC projected a big win for Mitt Romney against top Republican rival Newt Gingrich in Tuesday's Florida presidential primary, based on votes counted and exit polls.
Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, had 47 per cent while Gingrich, former speaker of the US House of Representatives, took 31 per cent of the vote with 66 per cent counted. Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum lagged behind with 13 per cent, with Texas Congressman Ron Paul at 7 per cent.
Exit polls, released when the last Florida voting stations closed at 8 pm (0100 Wednesday GMT), showed nearly the same results.
