Madonna's Super Bowl half-time show went without a hitch on Sunday night except for M.I.A’s finger action.

M.I.A and Nicki Minaj were singing with Madonna on her song Gimme All Your Luvin.

Paper Planes singer M.I.A. then made a rude gesture by sticking up her middle finger during her performance.

The NFL were quick to issue an apology, the Associated Press reports.

Brian McCarthy, a spokesperson for the NFL released a statement saying “The obscene gesture in the performance was completely inappropriate, very disappointing and we apologize to our fans.”

McCarthy explained that M.I.A had shown no indication of doing anything like that during rehearsals and the NFL were left shocked by her actions.

Christopher McClolskey, a spokesperson for the NBC said “The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show. Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers."

53-year-old Madonna opened the show with her massive hit Vogue.

Madonna and LMFAO shuffled together on the stage singing LMFAO’s hits Party Rock Anthem and Sexy And I Know It mixed in with Madonna’s single Music.

Gimme All Your Luvin came next with Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

Madonna was joined by Cee Lo Green for the finale with the duo singing Open Your Heart, Express Yourself and finishing off the performance with Like A Prayer.
