Washington - Federal regulators on Thursday approved the first licenses for new US nuclear reactors in more than three decades.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued licenses to Southern Company for the construction of two nuclear reactors in the south-eastern state of Georgia. Regulators approved the plans in a 4-1 vote.
The regulatory agency had not issued a construction license since 1978, a year before the partial meltdown at the nuclear plant in Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania.
