Grammy show gets huge ratings boost from Whitney Houston tribute
Feb 13, 2012, 21:10 GMT
Los Angeles - Near record numbers of music fans tuned in to watch Sunday night's Grammy Awards which were dominated by tributes to Whitney Houston, according to ratings figures released Monday.
Ratings firm Nielsen said preliminary estimates shows that an average of 39 million viewers watched the 3-hour-plus show, which took place a day after the shock death of Houston and included several tributes to the soul and pop diva.
The viewing figures represented a 46-per-cent rise from last year's ratings and the highest Grammy audience since 1964, when 51.7 million viewers tuned in to watch Michael Jackson win eight Grammys for Thriller.
The viewership of the top awards show in the US music business even outdrew last year's Oscars, which attracted 38 million viewers. This year's Oscars on February 26 are not expected to draw big ratings, given the lack of major blockbusters competing for the movie industry's top prizes.
