Seven dead in shooting at private California college
Apr 2, 2012, 23:00 GMT
San Francisco - Seven people were killed Monday in a shooting at a private religious college in northern California, an official in the city of Oakland said.
Oakland City Council President Larry Reid told broadcast reporters at the scene that seven people had been killed and three people were injured.
'This is a real sad day in the city of Oakland,' he told CNN.
Police planned to give more details about 0100 GMT Tuesday.
Police spokeswoman Johanna Watson indicated that a suspect had been detained, reportedly a man of Asian origin. There was no indication of a possible motive.
Reid said his 'understanding' was that the suspect was a former student.
The shooting took place at Oikos College, a private educational institute for Asian medicine, nurse training, music and religious studies. On its website, the college says it practices Christian values.
